WINTER WEATHER WOES - WHAT TO DO
Frozen Pipes, Leaky Pipes, Leaky Roofs, Leaky Windows, Clogged Drains
At times winter weather in the Santa Clarita Valley is extremely cold and rainy. Moreover, this weather combination can be brutal, bringing damage to our properties such as, our homes, vehicles, and businesses. Frozen pipes, leaky pipes, leaky roofs, leaky windows, and clogged gutters and drains are all evidences of the damaging nature of this winter weather environment.
When any part of your property is weather-damaged, it is best to respond quickly to prevent further damage and hazardous mold growth. Here are a number of actions to take to minimize and/or eliminate further damage.
What you should do…
1. Ventilate wet areas by alternating cycles of opened windows and heating.
2. Remove standing water from flat areas.
3. Take up saturated rugs and carpets when hardwood floors are at risk.
4. Stay out of rooms where ceilings are sagging fro retained water.
5. Transport computers to a dry environment, remove cases and blow dry with low- pressure air.
6. Remove lamps, telephones and decorative items from wet furniture tops.
7. Open drawers and cabinet doors for interior drying, but do not force open stuck drawers or doors.
8. Freeze valuable books and documents to retard mildew growth until drying can be performed.
9. Place aluminum foil squares, china saucers or wood blocks under furniture legs to avoid carpet staining.
By responding quickly after a loss, you minimize and perhaps avoid increased costs and additional damage.
